I Class
A series of 31 0-6-4T locomotives built in several batches by 3 manufacturers.
The first batch of 5 were delivered from Kitson in 1908 (the date column below shows the test date from Kitson records) and had 800 gallon tanks. Three similar locomotives were delivered by North British in 1912. Kitson delivered another 8 in 1913 with 1200 gallon tanks with a further 10 of these in 1914. Five similar locomotives were delivered by Hawthorn Leslie in 1916. The last two survivors were still active at the Malayan Collieries, Batu Arang, in the late 1960's.
Above & below: Two works photographs showing numbers 120 and 125. Interestingly, the number 125 has never officially been carried by an I class but as most locomotives were dismantled after testing and shipped in kit form for assembly at Sentul it is possible that a plate from another class was used for the photograph.
Below: in order, FMSR 86, FMSR 147 and FMSR 177. All 3 photographs reproduced with permission from the Stephenson Locomotive Society, they are thought to be from the H M le Fleming collection.
