WD Class
A series of 96 2-8-2 locomotives built in several batches by 5 manufacturers. They had 8-wheel bogie tenders.
These locomotives, known as "MacArthurs", were built in large numbers during World War 2 for the United States Army Transportation Corps and were shipped to many parts of the world as the allies regained control. Large numbers were sent to India and many of these were in kit form and some were assembled by various Indian workshops for use on various Indian Railways, while others were destined for SEAC and some of these remained in kit form. The situation in India was very fluid with changes of allocation being made all the time, before some were even delivered. BAR and others put surplus locomotives into store and these were sent far and wide to places such as Iraq, Nigeria, Gold Coast and Queensland. Following the Japanese surrender 96 were shipped into Malaya via Port Swettenham, either complete or in kit form. Those in kit form were taken to Sentul for final assembly. All originally had USATC numbers. Within weeks many of them started to find their way into Siam (later Thailand) as former FMSR locomotives which had been taken there by the Japanese were returned. By early 1946 28 were sold to FMSR in Malaya and were classified as 90 class, being numbered 901.01 through 901.28. In 1948 and 1949, 16 of these were sold on to Tanganyika, being later taken over by East African Railways. The remaining 68 became the property of RSR in 1946/47 as numbers 380-447. Many of these locomotives survived until the end of steam in the 1970s. Five RSR examples were donated to Cambodia in 1973 (386, 388, 408, 411 & 435). These were numbered 140-501 (408), 141-502 (411), 145.503 (435), 141.504 (386) & 141.505 (388).
