Class C

7 4-4-0 locomotives built by Neilson (2), Kitson (3) and Hawthorn, Leslie (2).

These became FMSR C class and were basically B class locomotives with 4-wheel tenders added, although they were built new. Outside cylinders were 12" x 18", driving wheels were 3' 3" and boiler pressure was 140 lbs. Renumbering into the first FMSR series took place between 1901 (formation of the FMSR) and 1903 (physical connection between the Perak and Selangor Railways). The 2 Hawthorn Leslie locomotives were passed to the then independent Johore State Railway in 1907, presumably for construction work as it did not open until 1909. It is not known if they were ever painted into its Caledonian Blue livery. They were taken back into the FMSR fold in 1912, by which time the vacant number 27 had already been taken by Hunslet 898, so they took numbers 28 & 29, the original 29 having passed to the construction department earlier that year.

Below: FMSR 18, formerly Perak 9, shows some modifications to the boiler and tender compared to the picture above. Photograph reproduced with permission from the Stephenson Locomotive Society, it is thought to be from the H M le Fleming collection.
