Tren de la Fresa
17th May 2009
This train operates between Madrid and Aranjuez on Saturdays and Sundays from April to November, except July and August, and is normally steam-hauled, however when no steam locomotive is available it uses heritage diesel or electric traction. The 50 mile round trip costs just 26€ and includes a visit to the palace gardens in Aranjuez. Departure from Madrid is around 10 am with the return from Aranjuez at 6 pm, each journey taking about 1 hour. I was returning from Segovia to Valencia on the Sunday earlier than usual and decided to try and photograph the train near Ciempozuelos. While driving through the centre of Madrid the train crossed a bridge in front of me and a few moments later I saw it again passing a large yard to the left of the motorway and I could see that it was steam-hauled. I arrived at my chosen location with time to spare and after the train had passed continued to Aranjuez where it was still in the platform.
The steam locomotive was 141F2111 GALICIA and it was hauling a dead preserved diesel 2180 (later 321 080) just in case.
The first 3 pictures show the train just south of Ciempozuelos on the morning of 17th May.
The next three pictures show the train departing from Aranjuez for the yard where the locomotive would run round and turn.
Above: Early afternoon and the train has already returned to Aranjuez station where it will stay until its evening departure.
Below: 321-080-4/2180 stands idle at the rear of the train.
The final 3 pictures show the train stabled at one end of the platform at Aranjuez. Class 465 EMUs operating between Madrid and Aranjuez were using the other end of the same platform, the remaining platforms being used by through trains.
