Modjokerto Stoomtram Maatschappij

Established in 1896. The objective was to construct and operate railway and tramway lines for general traffic in the Dutch East Indies.

The tramway was closely associated with the Babat - Djombang Tramway with locomotives being swapped between the two.

The Dutch East Indies government granted the concession to the private tramway company Modjokerto Stoomtram Maatschappij (MSM) in 1895.  MSM got the concession to build tramways in Mojokerto and the surrounding areas. The tramways built by MSM were connected to the Staats Spoorwegen (SS) Sidoarjo - Porong - Gempol - Gunung Gangsil - Bangil line and Sidoarjo - Tarik - Mojokerto - Jombang line.

Construction of tramways started on the route Gempol MSM - Japanan - Bangsal - Mojokerto (36 km) and was completed in 1898. In 1898-1899, MSM has succeeded in building a tramway with a total length of 78 km.

6 0-4-0Tr locomotives were acquired from Backer & Rueb in 1898 and numbered 1-6. Numbers 1 & 5 were soon transferred to the sister company BDSM. After WWII the remaining 4 were taken over by PNKA and became class B18, numbers B1801-4. The last survivor was active in 1967 but out of use by 1969 and written off by 1970.

The following year 6 0-4-0T locomotives arrived for the two companies and initially the first two went to BDSM with the other 4 going to MSM as numbers 7-10. Later the first 2 were transferred to the MSM taking the vacant numbers 1 & 5. All 6 survived to be taken over by PNKA after WWII as class B21, being numbered B2101-6. 4 more had been supplied to BDSM, being taken into SS ownership in 1916 but only 2 survived after WWII, becoming PNKA B2107-8.

Krauss had supplied a slightly larger but otherwise similar 0-6-0T to the BDSM in 1903 and the MSM acquired a new one in 1907 numbered 11, another in 1912 numbered 12 and finally 2 more in 1926 numbered 15 & 16. BDSM acquired another in 1913. All 6 survived WWII to become PNKA class C21, numbers C2101-6. C2103 is preserved at Taman Mini museum and C2102 is reported to be still stored inside Madiun Works.

In 1922 Hanomag supplied two 0-6-0T locomotives, numbered 13 & 14, later PNKA class C29 numbers C2901 & C2902. The latter was sold to Cepu Forest Railway and is now preserved at that location.
