Deli Spoorweg Maatschappij

1st July 1883        Construction started with the first sod. Two 0-4-0T locomotives from Hagans, numbered 1 & 2.

1st April 1886        Opening of westward line from Medan to Timbang Langkat 21 km, extended to Salesseh shortly afterwards.

Southerly direction to a rubber plantation.

                                Hohenzollern supplied 5 0-6-0T locomotives in 1884 numbered 3-7.

25th July 1886    Opening of northward line from Medan to Labuhan Deli. Operation  onwards to Belawan port delayed by bridge construction over Sungei Deli. (22 km).

Southward line from Medan to Deli Toewo (Deli Tua) via Kampung Bahroe.

                                Hohenzollern supplied 2 0-6-0T locomotives in 1886 numbered 8 & 9.

Easterly line from Medan to Perbaoengan via Serdang and Lubukpakam (Loeboek-pakam).

                                Hohenzollern supplied 4 0-6-0T locomotives in 1888 numbered 10-13

Southerly lines from Lubukpakam towards Bangumpurba to serve rubber plantations.

                                Hohenzollern supplied 2 0-6-0T locomotives in 1890 numbered 14 & 15.

By 1890  103 kms of track had been completed. Planned expansions to Arnhemia,  Bangun Purba and Rampah were delayed by the 1894 tobacco price crisis.

In 1900 work started again with lines from Purbaoengan to Bamban, Timbang Langkat to Tanjoeng and Poera to Pangkalan Brandan.

Hartmann supplied 9 0-6-4T locomotives between 1900 & 1092, these being numbered 17-25. These were followed by 6 0-4-4T locomotives in 1903 (26-29) & 1904 (1 & 2, replacing the original Hagan locomotives which had been sold in the 1890's). No 28 has been preserved at Taman Mini.

In 1904 the line through Bamban had reached Tebing Tinggi. More approvals in 1913 resulted in Pangkalan to Besitang being completed in 1921, and a short branch line from Selasseh south to Kwala was built. From Tebing Tinggi the line continued south into the mountain via Dolok Merangir to Pematang Siantar. For this last line 4 Siantar class 2-8-4T locomotives were purchased from Werkspoor in 1916, numbered 45-48. Number 48 is preserved at Taman Mini.

A large number of 2-6-4T locomotives were also ordered for these new lines, Hartmann supplying numbers 31-38 in 1913 & 1914 and Werkspoor 39-44 in 1915, 50-55 in 1920 and 57-59 in 1921. Number 55 is preserved at Taman Mini.

Another line from Tebing Tinggi continued south-eastwards parallel to the coast but a few miles inland to Kisaran where it split again, one line heading to the coast at Tanjungbalai, reached in 1927, and the other heading south to Rantau Prapat, with the first section Kisaran to Goenting Saga opening on 4th September 1924. Hanomag supplied 10 2-4-2T locomotives in 1928 and 1929, numbered 60-69, in time for the opening of the extension to Milano, opened on 1st January 1931. The short section to Rantau Prapat was not ready until 1937.

This map from wiki shows the lines built up to 1890.

The Google Earth map below shows the system as at 2008 along with the place name's current spelling

The picture above shows construction of the Deli Medan Railway between 1878 and 1886. The nearest locomotive s one of the early 0-6-0T locomotives from Hohenzollern with another one at the back and 2 smaller ones beyond it. These are most likely the two 0-4-0T locomotives supplied from Hagan's in 1884. The picture below is an enlargement of the locomotives at the back. I would date this picture as 1884-1886.
