FMSR Singapore section timetables from 1st January 1912

1912 1917/18 1921 1930

I only have a few timings for trains in Singapore under the FMSR rule. The earliest complete timetable I have found for this section is effective from 1st May 1912 and can be found here. It includes the Johore section also. I have a few starting times for 1917 with the odd mention of times between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and a 1918 supplement. Interpolated timetables for 1917 and 1918 appear below this text. I also have 1921 and 1930 timetables which need transcribing. I am finding more all the time but usually changes to published timetables which I don't have copies of. The following is a copy of some of my notes:

The Straits Times, Tuesday January 2, 1917, page 7 column 1, bottom.

Train services

The mail trains from Singapore for the North leave Tank Road station daily at 7.7 am and 7 pm, arriving at Kuala Lumpur at 7.18 pm and 6.45 am respectively. The through express to Penang leaves Kuala Lumpur at 8 am daily arriving at Penang at 6.28 pm the same day.

The southward bound mail train leaves Penang at 8 am daily arriving at Kuala Lumpur at 6.22 pm and the southward bound train from Kuala Lumpur leaves at 8.30 pm arriving at Tank Road Singapore at 8.16 am the next day.

The night trains between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and vice versa have sleepers attached. Restaurant cars are also provided on day trains between Kuala Lumpur and Penang and night trains between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Refreshments can be obtained on day trains between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Breakfast and Tiffin baskets will be supplied on day trains between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore on application being made to the station masters. Tariff of charges: Breakfast 75¢, Tiffin $1, dinner $1.50.

The above article implies that trains ran throughout between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. As the causeway was not opened until 1923 this was not possible before then. Local trains ran from Singapore to Woodlands jetty and the railway operated a ferry service to Johore Bahru jetty which was used as a terminus for the Kuala Lumpur trains until the causeway came into use. As far as I can ascertain the small ferries only carried foot passengers or goods wagons.

The daily local train service to and from Singapore is as follows:-

From Tank Road:-  6.5 am, 7.7 am, 7.45 am, 9 am, 10.29 am, 12 noon, 1.30 pm, 2.55 pm, 4.40 pm, 5.35 pm, 7 pm, and 7.16 pm.

The 7 pm train stops at Newton and Woodlands only.

From Johore Bahru:- 7.9 am, 8.42 am, 10.15 am, 11.42 am, 1.16 pm, 3.2 pm, 4.23 pm, 6.5 pm and 8.22 pm (Sundays only).

The 7.9 am train stops at Newton and Woodlands only.

 1918 supplement (changes underlined).

The daily local train service to and from Singapore in 1918 is as follows:-

From Tank Road:-  6.5 am, 7.7 am, 7.45 am, 9 am, 10.29 am, 12 noon, 1.30 pm, 2.25 pm, 4.40 pm, 5.37 pm, 7 pm, and 7.16 pm.

The 7 pm train stops at Newton and Woodlands only.

From Johore Bahru:- 7.9 am, 8.42 am, 10.15 am, 11.42 am, 1.16 pm, 3.2 pm, 4.28 pm, 6.5 pm and 8.22 pm (now daily).

The 7.9 am train stops at Newton and Woodlands only.

 Notes

  1. The Johore Bahru times are presumably ferry departures.

  2. The only access to Woodlands station is via train or the jetty.

  3. The Woodlands station is nowhere near the current Woodlands station, which is located where Kranji halt used to be!
