Uncle Howard's Album - People

On this page we see Uncle Howard in a more social context. I don't know who the other people are, but they are clearly all Europeans, except for the servants and nannies. My guess is that we are looking at semi-formal gatherings of FMSR's European management team.

Malcolm Wilton-Jones points out that all the FMSR office staff, including those at Sentul, wore white at that time. He also notes that FMSR had a rest house at Fraser's Hill, which may be the location of these gatherings.

The images shown have been reduced (to fit most screens) and enhanced. The originals are beautifully detailed scans from high quality prints. To see the original full size scan just click anywhere on the image.

Uncle Howard was the owner of, or at least had the use of, a Royal Enfield motorcycle with sidecar. The registration is SL 137, indicating Selangor perhaps. Is the lady his wife? It certainly looks like a family portrait, but she looks rather older than him in this picture. Surely she doesn't intend to go out in the sidecar with that hat on? It would blow away in no time. Anyone out there able to date the motorcycle? From the little I can discover, Royal Enfield made a bike like this from 1910 onwards, but during the war years (1914-1918) they would be fully occupied supplying the armed forces.

An interesting detail is the fence posts. These are formed from flat-bottomed rail.

This looks like a tea party, but I wonder if there's a cricket match going on? Some of the men are in whites with open neck shirts. Uncle Howard is in the back row with his hands on his hips (as usual). His wife (I guess) is sat down next to the nanny.

This looks like a very formal affair. Almost everyone, men and women, is wearing white, with the men wearing bow ties or neck ties. Even the children are dressed in white. I think Uncle Howard is the gentleman on the left with hands on hips. The lady next to him in the flowered dress (why isn't she wearing white?) could be his wife. Uncle Howard appears to be the senior member of the party. All the other men are relatively young. The young man in the middle row, three along from Uncle Howard, could possibly be the boy on the motorbike.
