On Wednesday 13th March 4472 Flying Scotsman hauled a VSOE special from Victoria to Westbury (for Bath) and return. It is seen at the Theale water stop on the return journey.

10 days later 5051 Earl Bathurst approaches Reading, running 40 minutes late following failure of the diesel locomotive which was removed at Ealing Broadway.

On 27th March 4472 Flying Scotsman was hauling a VSOE special to Stratford-upon-Avon when photographed just west of Sonning cutting, shortly before 10 am.

On Saturday 13th April 6024 King Edward I hauled the London Express between Birmingham Snow Hill and Paddington. It is seen approaching Didcot on the right.

On Sunday 14th April 35005 Canadian Pacific hauled a Cathedrals Express special from Alton to Salisbury and Eastleigh. It is seen crossing Wallington River near Fareham, passing Millbrook and then approaching Redbridge.

Later the same evening 4472 Flying Scotsman was seen leaving Reading with a return VSOE special.

On Saturday 20th April 4472 Flying Scotsman hauled a VSOE special from Victoria to Wolverhampton and is seen approaching Reading at walking pace. Click here for the reason.

It was over a month before I was able to photograph another steam train on the main line and it was again 4472 Flying Scotsman with the VSOE pullman train, this time passing through Sonning cutting in the evening of 22nd May.

The next day 35005 Canadian Pacific took the Cathedrals Express to Bath and Bristol. It was running so early on the return I almost missed it, first at Worting junction where it was 20 minutes early, then at Basingstoke.

On Thursday 30th May 60009 Union of South Africa ran from Bridgenorth to London in preparation for the next days VSOE luncheon excursion and is seen approaching Sonning Cutting in the evening (top 3 pictures). 2 days later it returned north and is seen passing Waltham in the lower 2 pictures.

Ivatt 2-6-2T 41312 was operating a shuttle service between Ascot and Alton on Sunday June 2nd.
The top row shows it arriving at Ascot around midday and the bottom row shows it shortly after its return to Alton. In the middle picture 9F 2-10-0 92212 stands on the right ready to take the next train to Alresford.

Its Wednesday June 26th and 35005 Canadian Pacific is ahead of time as it passes Earley with the Cathedrals Express en route to Bath and Bristol.

On Saturday July 20th 35005 Canadian Pacific again visited Earley, this time with The Gloucester Meteor to Gloucester, Lydney and Newport. The top, left picture shows it on the outward journey. On the return journey it became the first steam-hauled passenger train to stop at Earley for many years when it came to rest in platform 2 due to an adverse signal. The second picture shows it pulling slowly into the platform, the third shows it at rest and the fourth is a 1 second exposure as it accelerates away.

4 days later 35005 Canadian Pacific was at Earley yet again with the Cathedrals Express to Bath and Bristol, this time with 12 coaches.

On Saturday 27th July it was the turn of 6024 King Edward I to take the Green Train to Minehead from Didcot. The top two pictures show it passing Basildon at speed while the two at the bottom were taken at Padworth crossing as it accelerate away from a check. The train was diesel-hauled from Alton to Didcot and passed Earley behind 37208.

On Thursday 22nd August 35005 Canadian Pacific speeds through Earley with the Cathedrals Express to Bath and Bristol.

Two days later 5029 Nunney Castle hauled The Elgar Explorer from Paddington to Worcester and return. It is seen at Reading on the outward journey, first 5 pictures on the right. The final picture shows it passing Twyford at speed under a stormy evening sky on the return journey.

On Saturday August 31st 35005 Canadian Pacific took The Cathedrals Express from Waterloo to Winchester and return. The pictures show it powering through Earley on the return in the evening.

On Wednesday September 18th 35005 Canadian Pacific took The Cathedrals Express from Victoria to Bristol and return to Waterloo. The pictures show it passing Earley on the outward journey on a dull morning.

Thursday November 14th was the day 73096 finally made it back to the main line with a test from Alton to Clapham Junction and return. The two pictures on the left show it passing Virginia Water on the outward journey.

The Standard Day Return ran from Alton to Salisbury and return via Guildford, Reading, Westbury and Basingstoke behind 73096 on 17th November. Click on the headboard, right, to see several pages of pictures taken during the trip.

The Fantasy Express ran from Birmingham Snow Hill to Didcot and return behind 5972 Olton Hall on Sunday 24th November. The locomotive is seen, left, at Didcot during the afternoon, with 3822.

On 14th December 4965 Rood Ashton Hall was in charge of The London Express from Birmingham Snow Hill to Paddington and was photographed, left, between Reading and Sonning cutting.
