Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway

26th September 2007

The days plan was to photograph the departure from Antonito, then drive to Cumbres pass to photograph the train from Chama before going on to Chama itself to visit the depot and yard. Afterwards we would search out more locations. Before the train left Antonito we were able to photograph a pair of diesels on a Denver and Rio Grande freight which was on the standard gauge line. In the event we changed plans as the train from Chama arrived at Cumbres double-headed by 487 and 484. On arrival 487 uncoupled and ran on out of sight towards Osier. Five minutes later 484 departed for Osier with the passenger train and a further five minutes later 487 returned propelling 3 empty ballast wagons. We stayed to watch the loading process and photograph the loaded train departing towards Osier before heading for Chama. On our return via Cumbres we saw 487 again waiting with another loaded ballast train for 488 to arrive with the train from Antonito and took some unusual photographs of steam-hauled passenger and freight trains crossing at 10,000'.
