Plains Railway

6th November 2007

Took pictures of Christchurch trams before breakfast then photographed a couple of freight trains on the way to Ashburton where we visited the Plains Railway and took a ride behind the K class 2-4-2 88 which had been "scrapped" in 1928 by being dumped in the Oreti river as hardcore for an embankment. It was exhumed in 1974, with restoration starting in 1976 and being completed by 1982. This started a trend because several more locomotives have now been exhumed, some with a view to restoration to working order, including K94 pictured here in "as recovered" condition.
