Wellington to Christchurch

3rd November 2007

We took the morning ferry from Wellington to Picton to catch the afternoon diesel-hauled train to Christchurch. The ferry company was unable to guarantee that the steam locomotive could be shipped across the strait in time  as they would not take it until it was absolutely cold. The crossing was absolutely calm. The train runs along the east coast for much of the way while snow-capped mountains are visible to the west.
