Snowdon Mountain Railway

The following pictures were taken in Summer 1988 during several visits to the line.

No 2 Enid draws in to Llanberis station with an afternoon train from the summit.

No 9, the lines first diesel, propels its train out of Llanberis the same afternoon.

The first steam-hauled passenger train of the day stops for water on the way to the summit.

At Clogwyn station we passed diesel No 10 with a train for Llanberis (above and below).

Above and below: No 6 Padarn rests in Summit station, still engulfed in cloud.

An unidentified diesel stands in the mist at Summit station.

Above: The view from a descending train between the Summit and Clogwyn which can be seen on the extreme right, with an uphill train approaching and leaving a tell-tale plume of smoke. Llanberis and its lake are in the left distance.

Below: A similar view a few minutes later as the two trains approach Clogwyn.

Above: Inside the descending train. The locomotive can be seen through the far end windows.

Above: No 8 Eryri standing at Clogwyn as we pass.

Below: No 8 propels its train out of Clogwyn towards the summit.

Above: another view of No 8 leaving Clogwyn.

Below: Looking up towards the Summit from the descending train below Clogwyn No 8 appears to be lower but is in fact some 100 feet higher - the line continues to climb through Clogwyn although not quite as steeply as either side.

Above: No 5 Moel Siabod propels another uphill train out of a passing loop at Halfway.

More pictures taken in Summer 1988. After our train arrived back at Llanberis I walked back up to Hebron to take the following pictures. No 8 Eryri is on the downhill train and one of the diesels on the uphill train.

Every day there is an early morning steam-propelled freight to the summit taking up the daily supplies so I was very early one morning to catch it on the climb and also descending and crossing with the first passenger train of the day.
