Staatsspoorwegen op Zuid-Sumatra

This was the last railway proper to be built in Sumatra with construction starting in 1911 and not finishing until 1932. The first section to open was in the Lampung district in the extreme south of Sumatra in 1914 and this was followed in 1915 by a section in Palembang. It would be another 12 years before these two sections became joined together in 1927. Meanwhile the line from Palembang had reached Tanjungenim by 1921 and the line from the southern port of Pandjang had reached K. Boemi by 1922, these being determined by perusal of maps of the areas dated 1921 and 1922 respectively. The last section from Muaraenim to Lubuklingau was completed in 1932 giving a total route distance of 661 kms.

Unlike the other Sumatran Railways this line came under direct control of the SS Java from the outset and all the locomotives were sourced or ordered from/by them and most numbers were in the same sequence, except that some classes had 50 added to their numbers. Since the workshops were built at Lahat which was not opened until the 1930's? it's likely that all heavy maintenance would have been carried out in Java and no record of such transfers between the islands has been found.

Text in green above is based on assumption, not fact.

Further locomotives were transferred from Java over the years. Full details are not known but included several members of classes B16, B22, C11, C50 and D52. Those confirmed appear below. I have also found photographs of construction trains with ZSS stock hauled by 0-6-0T locomotives of the type used by Solo Valleiwerken, later classified as C13 by PJKA, so assume they were shipped to South Sumatra for this purpose.

                    B16xx
  Hartmann 2560 1900 0-4-2T 280 x 400 1058 mm NIS 317   B2212 Detanked and fitted with a B50 tender.
  Hartmann 1432 1886 2-6-0T 380 x 509 1106 mm SS 98 325 C1120 At least 9 of these were allocated to Sumatran depots in 1971.
  Hartmann 3446 1911 4-6-2 450 x 600 1503 mm SS 384 708 C5003 Tender from a DD51. 8 of these allocated to Sumatran depots in 1971.
  Krupp 3230 1951 2-8-2 500 x 600 1503 mm DKA     D52007
  Krupp 3252 1951 2-8-2 500 x 600 1503 mm DKA     D52029
  Krupp 3255 1951 2-8-2 500 x 600 1503 mm DKA     D52032
  Krupp 3260 1951 2-8-2 500 x 600 1503 mm DKA     D52037 At least 10 of these were allocated to Sumatran depots in 1971.
  Krupp 3270 1951 2-8-2 500 x 600 1503 mm DKA     D52047

Above and below: Former SV 0-6-0T locomotives working construction trains with ZSS stock, so presumably they were sent across from Java for this purpose. 6 survivors on Java became PJKA class C1301-C1306.

Above: SS 32, formerly SV 10, was reportedly in South Sumatra when this photo was taken.

Below: A photograph taken at Tanjungkarang in 1915. The locomotive on the left is SS 307, Hartmann 2-6-0T 1046/1879 while that on the right is an ex-Solo Valleiwerken 0-6-0T. Neither of these locomotives are known to have survived after WWII, but if they had they would have become classes C11 and C13 respectively.
